DevOps and Architecture in SAFe 5.1

This was my second recorded conversation with Marc Rix, and by this point we had developed a rhythm. SAFe 5.1 had just come out with meaningful updates to its treatment of DevOps and architecture — two areas I care about deeply and that I felt earlier versions had underdeveloped. Marc, as a SAFe Fellow, had been part of those discussions, and I wanted to understand not just what changed but why. What signals from the field had prompted the revisions, and what did Scaled Agile hope practitioners would do differently as a result?

The conversation turned out to be one of those exchanges where the nuances matter more than the headlines. Framework updates often get reduced to bullet points on a slide, but the thinking behind them — the trade-offs, the debates, the real-world failures that motivated the changes — is where the value lies. If you work at the intersection of DevOps and enterprise architecture, I think you will find this worth your time.
